Crafting a modern platform rooted in nostalgia
Zulily’s flash sales once captivated shoppers with unbeatable deals on top brands. To bring it back to life after being acquired by Beyond, the team turned to Domaine to craft a refreshed yet familiar brand experience on Shopify. The rebuild has made for a more scalable, maintainable foundation for the Zulily team without compromising on the known and loved shopping experience for customers.
Fan-favorite flash sales are at the heart of Zulily’s brand identity, so it was essential to create feature parity while rebuilding the site on Shopify. At the same time, the legacy flash deal flow needed to be modernized and simplified to reduce the complexity for the merchandisers. Domaine implemented a three-step flow to automate flash deals and sync them across collections. Domaine was able to create an automated "deal" queue within a grid layout for the site’s homepage, granting merchandisers the perfect blend of customizable layout and automation.
Refreshed branding with a spark of nostalgia
To make a successful comeback, Zulily needed to maintain some core elements of the brand identity to spark a sense of nostalgia for returning customers. The Domaine team did this by keeping the brand’s beloved purple identity, but balanced it out and breathed new life into the customer experience with a clean, updated interface. The result was a reimagined platform that felt true to Zulily’s roots, but ready to engage both new and returning customers.
Integrating Shopify with proprietary systems (connecting the dots)
Domaine worked closely with the Zulily team to help integrate their proprietary merchandising solution and Google’s Vertex AI with the new Shopify site. Domaine was able to work within the confines of these systems while delivering innovative solutions to go beyond any limitations they provided. These integrations laid the groundwork for a scalable, SaaS-driven solution, enhancing search capabilities and maintaining technical reliability across systems.
A collaborative, cross-functional partnership
The partnership between Domaine and Zulily went beyond technical development to include strategic and operational support by way of a cross-functional team structure. From the project’s inception, Domaine provided guidance on re-platforming, multi-site architecture, and Shopify best practices, through program management and on-site workshops.
